On Monday, Jan. 30th I decided to write a book about my experiences and realities of being a two-time cancer survivor and hip amputee. Over the years, people here and there always suggested I should write a book.
I always put it on the back burner because I was focused on being the best inspirational speaker I could be, and I wasn’t sure how I was going to start it. On Jan. 30th, I started to just write and putting my story on paper came to me effortlessly.
A lot of the information that I needed was already on my website or in my PowerPoint Presentation, which made it easier for me to go back to those dark times in my life and explain my feelings, thoughts and reactions while dealing with cancer as a teenager.
While writing, everything poured out of me and I was able to be descriptive about how I felt when I first heard that I was diagnosed with Osteosarcoma, when I had to get a knee replacement, when I had lung cancer and when I had to get my leg amputated when I was 17 years old in 2003.
My book is mostly done, and I just have to interview some family members who were around during my darkest days. I believe it would be great to get their perspective about my cancer ordeal.
Since this Monday, Jan. 30th, I’ve written 29 pages. I decided to start the introduction of the book when I first got diagnosed, which was in 1999. I chose to conclude it in 2013, which is exactly 14 years, and I was 14 years old when I was first diagnosed.
In the book, I speak on everything that affected me positively or negatively. For instance, I speak about my experience with having knee cancer two-times, having a knee replacement, having lung cancer, getting my right leg amputated, sports, education, music, mentorship and video games.
