On May 4th, I went to CSUSB Toastmasters, but before I went to the meeting I went to the advisor’s office. She offered to look at my resume and update it for me so I could have a better chance of landing a job.
She gave me some tips of how to perfect my resume and gave me a few samples. She also showed me a few state job websites and recommended that they would be a great fit for me. I’m appreciative that she saw something in me to help, because I’m not a student at California State University, San Bernardino (CSUSB) and she wants me to have a successful future.
At the end of the meeting, I told the advisor that I had something for her, and gave her a flyer, brochure and business card. She was impressed with how professional it looked and she said it was really good. Although the advisor helped me perfect my resume. She said she could tell that I want to be an inspirational speaker and that I have a divine connection with the message I want to spread.
I told her my speech is about many things and not just about my experience with having cancer and becoming a hip amputee. I going to also talk about my experience with having a knee replacement and sports when I made the high school basketball team. I’m also going to share how video games and music affected me in a positive way.
During my speech, I will talk about my life from 1999 to 2013, which is exactly 14 years, and I was 14 years old when I was first diagnosed with knee cancer called Osteosarcoma. My goal is to use my story to educate, but at the same time entertain. For instance, I will be using two entertainment mediums that helped me the most during my darkest days, which are songs from music artist’s Nas, The Pharcyde and the video game inFAMOUS.
The advisor said that I’ve been through a really dramatic experience by becoming a hip amputee at such a young age. She also said she doesn’t know how I was able to graduate from college because that was a great accomplishment within itself. Until this meeting with the advisor, the thought of me being a college graduate wasn’t a big deal. The advisor really put it in perspective that I should be proud of this accomplishment because there were many chances that cancer could have taken my life.
* I was invited to a networking mixer event hosted by Network After Work. The main purpose of the event is to give business minded people a platform to network and expand their business by connecting with like-minded people. The next event is on May 19th, from 6pm to 9pm in downtown Los Angeles.
* I’m appreciative that Network After Work reached out to me and want me to attend their event. I’m going to event ready to network and make connections, and I thank God for the blessings he has given me so far and for the blessings in the near future.
