On April 3rd, my Mother was watching The Ellen Show, and Ellen’s guest was Lewis Howes, who is a NYT bestselling author, lifestyle entrepreneur and former pro Arena League Football player.
Howes shared secrets with Ellen about how he turned his life around for the better. He also enjoys helping people achieve their dreams. For those who are struggling to get their idea out to the world, Ellen encouraged people to go to her website and tell their story because Mr. Howes can make dreams come true.
My Mother suggested that I should consider this opportunity and go to Ellen’s website. Throughout the day I thought about it, and realized even though it might be a million to one that I’ll even be considered, but I felt I still had to try.
On April 3rd at 9:54 pm, I wrote an introduction of want I’m trying to do as an inspirational speaker and what is the purpose behind my message. I said:
Hello Ellen and Mr. Howes,
My name is Darryl C. Richie. Inspirational speaker and author looking to inspire with my story of being a two-time cancer survivor. During my teen years, I had knee cancer twice called Osteosarcoma from 1999-2000 and 2002-2003.
I was first diagnosed with knee cancer called Osteosarcoma at 14 years old, and had to get a knee replacement. The cancer came back in my right knee at 17 years old, and I had to get my right leg amputated. Now I’m a hip amputee and could only walk with a prosthetic leg. In 2009, the inFAMOUS videogame franchise and superhero Cole MacGrath had a positive affect on my life. I’m looking forward to sharing how the game helped me overcome my many insecurities when I became a hip amputee.
I feel what I've been through is a superhero story because of the adversities that I was forced to overcome, and it made sense for me to compare my story to my favorite superhero: Cole MacGrath.
With help from my life coach, I decided to become an inspirational speaker in 2013, and started my company “CalmandStrong.” Calm because I have a calming personality, and strong because of the adversities I was able to overcome.
My goal as an inspirational speaker is to be a voice for children and teenager cancer patients or anybody who has ever been sick in the hospital with a serious illness. My focus is to connect my experiences and realities of being a two-time cancer survivor and hip amputee to the digital world of the inFAMOUS videogame franchise and superhero Cole MacGrath.
As of 2017, I’m going to be 32 years old, and I’m 14 years’ cancer free and healthy.
Thank you,
Darryl C. Richie (CalmandStrong)
I wasn’t expecting to hear anything this week from The Ellen Show, but I know I’m going up against hundreds of people who have dreams they believe in 110% just like me. I’m at peace because I know I did my best with my submission, and I’ll still be looking for other opportunities in the future because I’m passionate about reaching my goal.

* I received an e-mail from California State University, Long Beach (CSULB) Journalism and Public Relations Day, which is going to be on April 13th, and I’ll be attending the event to network.
* On April 5th, I attended a meeting for Toastmasters at CSUSB, and I’ll be completing my fifth speech from the second manual book on April 19th. My speech is going to be entitled, “Creativity of The Pharcyde,” which is going to be about the history of the Hip-Hop group and how their inspirational lyrics helped me after I became a hip amputee. I plan to record the speech, so be on the lookout for it in a couple weeks.
